Working While ESEA

A toolkit on how to support ESEAs in the workplace

This toolkit is designed to foster a more inclusive and supportive work environment for East and Southeast Asians. By understanding the cultural nuances, communication styles, and potential hurdles they may encounter, organisations can better support ESEAs, ensuring that they can thrive and contribute their fullest potential.

We spoke with a group of professionals and they have identified the following as challenges ESEAs face in their workplaces:

1.   Isolation, lack of visibility and belonging

2.   Racialised Stereotypes and expectations

3.   Lack of representation in leadership roles

4.   Lack of recognition in leadership roles

5.   Lack of recognition of anti-ESEA racism

6.   Lack of representation and recognition even in staff race networks

According to them an ESEA-supportive workplace would have:

1.   ESEA recognition and power

2.   Support from non-ESEAs

3.   ESEA spaces

4.   ESEAs integrated into wider EDI initiatives
